We love it when one specialization leads to another. In this case we met Brandt and Mandy through a portrait assignment for Golf Digest. We were thrilled when they decided to commission us to photograph their wedding.

The event was formal but relaxed, held on a lawn at the Cheekwood Botanical Garden of Nashville. The couple treated their guests to a unique first dance; The song was performed by Vince Gil, a personal friend of the couple.

We are sure that our paths will cross with this amazing couple again, if not on the golf course perhaps on a travel piece somewhere! That would really bring it all together.

Thanks to our local assistant, Joel Hood, who made our job easier with his calm and knowledgeable presence.

Congrats to Mandy, Brandt and their wonderful families!

Personal Travel Project in Italy - Roving in Rome and the Less-travelled Umbria

We spent late August and early September touring parts of Italy and visiting with family there. We started with all the major sights of Rome and worked our way up to Umbria, Tuscany’s less-popular little sister. In Rome we felt more local by renting a little house in the Trastevere area and in Umbria we had the opportunity to enjoy a relative’s amazing hill-top villa.

Eating gelatto, pasta and pizza was, of course, our primary objective. Trying to speak in Italian and navigating from site to site provided great mental exercise, team building opportunities and an excuse to drink more wine. After a few glasses your perception is that your Italian is better and getting lost on the way home is even easier.

We also took some time to make some travel imagery, focusing mainly on long exposures. We used a 10-stop neutral density filter to make images like this one of the Trevi fountain. Long exposures are a great way to keep the human element present but fluid.

Thanks to Bruce and Addie Wolfe our gracious hosts in Umbria.

Miracle Man Erik Compton for Golf World Magazine

After getting his first heart transplant at age 12, Erik Compton focused everything on becoming a golf professional. Unfortunately transplants don’t last forever and last year, at age 27, he suffered a major heart attack while fly fishing. As Compton drove himself to the emergency room he called family and friends to say goodbye. Doctors were able to stabilize him, but his weakened heart would need to be replaced once again. On May 20, 2008, Erik received a second transplant, and now he is doing things he never thought possible, including becoming a father. We got to spend some time with him making images for Golf World.

The first morning of the shoot was the most crucial. Compton was getting a biopsy on his heart and we were to make images during the procedure. We made it through the Miami traffic rush, found the right building at Jackson Memorial Hospital (a campus roughly the size of Disney World) and talked our way onto the cardiac care floor only to be told by a nurse that we had to find “The Alamo” in order to get permission to do the shoot. “The Alamo?”

We had tried to convince Compton days before the shoot that hospital public relations personnel like some lead time. He assured us it wouldn’t be a problem since he basically lives there. Turns out not even Compton can trump the rules in the third largest hospital in the country. Somehow, in less than 15 minutes, Eric had found the Alamo, gained the sympathy of the one PR person on duty and found his way back. We donned hair nets and surgical masks and were ushered to the cardiac catheterization lab just as the doctor was taking the last of five rice-sized pieces of Compton’s heart for testing.

The rest of the shoot was much more low key. We photographed Compton and his beautiful bride at their Miami Beach condo, followed him around a golf course and finished out with some portraits of him fly-fishing in Biscayne Bay. We felt lucky to have met and spent some time with Erik Compton. To say he is inspiring is a gross understatement. He changes your life by showing you how he lives his.

Photographing Golf Legend Tom Watson for Golf World Magazine

39 victories on the PGA Tour and 8 major championships. Tom Watson is a legend. We were excited to get this assignment from Golf World, even if it meant hopping a plane 7 hours after getting the call and making the 1200 mile trek to Kansas City.

Bill Fields met us the next morning at Watson’s office. Bill is as venerable a golf writer as Watson is a golfer. “I understand there is no such thing as perfect, but there is no sense in not trying to do things that way,” says Watson in Fields’ story. No pressure.

We were given 20 minutes of Watson’s time to do our work. We made some portraits in a makeshift studio created out of a spare 7x8 office and also shot a few portraits outside in a park across the street. Tom originally wanted us to shoot the photos during the interview, so we were pretty happy with the access we ended up with. We were also happy that we managed to shoot the outside stuff just before the sun cracked through the clouds, wrecking the nice overcast light.

The guys at Lights On got us set up with some grip and lighting, and Digital Labrador came to the rescue and rented us a lens at 9am, shortly after getting our call. Calvin McGuire was our trusty local assistant, doing a stellar job and helping ensure that we caught our flight back to Orlando three hours after wrapping the shoot. There was no time for a stop at Gates BBQ this trip through Kansas City....which is a shame!
Crazy in Love at Lana’i Four Seasons Resort Manele Bay

We were honored to document the nuptials of our good friends Yvonne Lai and Adam Spangler, of Manhattan, at the Four Seasons Resort in Lana’i, Hawaii. Around 40 guests were witness to an elegant a cliff-side ceremony overlooking the ocean.

The event was characterized by the smiles of close friends and family enjoying each other’s company and the natural beauty of Hawaii. Between great snorkeling, golf and the amazing spa there was plenty to do on the days adjacent to the wedding.

For the ceremony itself the bride said that she avoided a structured color scheme, “I wanted it to have a natural, simple, and unrehearsed feel to it.”

The couple chose a bamboo wedding canopy draped with white gauze and pale yellow leis which swayed in the breeze. The sides of the aisle were lined with orchids and yellow plumeria.

A last minute idea was to provide rice-paper parasols for the guests. The parasols were a great choice in that they added color and dimension to the event. Giving them as favors was also a creative way to honor the bride’s Vietnamese heritage and provide the guests relief from the sun.

The reception was powered by the DJ skills of the couple’s friend Odiaka Gonzalez of Oakland, California.

The in-house planner at the Four Seasons Manele Bay, Akiko Suzuki, was gracious in helping us prepare from afar. Congratulations to the couple and their families!
