39 victories on the PGA Tour and 8 major championships. Tom Watson is a legend. We were excited to get this assignment from Golf World, even if it meant hopping a plane 7 hours after getting the call and making the 1200 mile trek to Kansas City.
Bill Fields met us the next morning at Watson’s office. Bill is as venerable a golf writer as Watson is a golfer. “I understand there is no such thing as perfect, but there is no sense in not trying to do things that way,” says Watson in Fields’ story. No pressure.
We were given 20 minutes of Watson’s time to do our work. We made some portraits in a makeshift studio created out of a spare 7x8 office and also shot a few portraits outside in a park across the street. Tom originally wanted us to shoot the photos during the interview, so we were pretty happy with the access we ended up with. We were also happy that we managed to shoot the outside stuff just before the sun cracked through the clouds, wrecking the nice overcast light.
The guys at Lights On got us set up with some grip and lighting, and Digital Labrador came to the rescue and rented us a lens at 9am, shortly after getting our call. Calvin McGuire was our trusty local assistant, doing a stellar job and helping ensure that we caught our flight back to Orlando three hours after wrapping the shoot. There was no time for a stop at Gates BBQ this trip through Kansas City....which is a shame! Read Fields’ full story here.
