Driving from Florida to Colorado didn’t seem quite far enough so we headed straight up to Montana for a backpacking trip in the Beartooth Mountains. What is it about birthdays in the early thirties that makes one want to do something physically impossible? Like, say hike 26 miles at 10,000 feet in three days, with camera gear. As we said on the trek, “Sometimes you have to just keep putting one bloody stump in front of the other.”
Beyond the foot damage and the amazing amount of mosquitoes it was an incredible experience with great friends that we should repeat in ten years. Although at that point we may have to add some more time and pack-llamas into the mix.
We packed in one digital and one film camera and took pleasure in making some panoramic images and long exposures of the terribly huge country that is the Beartooths. View those images in our archive here. On our way back to Colorado we stopped for a night at Devils Tower. We watched Close Encounters of the Third Kind on the laptop in the tent and then went up to the base of the tower at about 1:30 AM to make some long exposures of the night sky. This panoramic is our favorite from the evening, which was creepier than predicted. Every dog barking and falling star seemed more significant after the film viewing.
