Golf World asked us to do some portraits to accompany a piece by Tim Rosaforte on Arjun Atwal’s desire to move on with his life and his golf career after he was absolved of wrongdoing in a 2007 fatal car accident. We were pleased when the photography moved from an inside feature to the cover.
Photo Director Christian Iooss wanted us to capture a “coming out of the darkness” feel. We weren’t able to scout prior to the shoot and were not even sure of an exact location until hours before we were scheduled to meet. We selected a blue background material that we felt would pair well with Arjun’s eye color, and hoped we would have a chance to shoot some additional location portraits if the opportunity presented itself.
We met Arjun in the clubhouse at the Isleworth Golf and Country Club. He had just come off the course after playing a round with Tiger Woods. Arjun was gracious in giving us some time both at the club and at home with his family. We were able to accomplish both the background shot and the extra location portraits. Having an assistant break down and pack up the Isleworth set up while we worked at the house was a great move.
We made all of our images using available daylight, silks, and reflectors. Arjun is sponsored by CBUK, the more cutting edge apparel line from Cutter & Buck. Though we rarely suggest white clothes for a portrait, his white CBUK pullover ended up really working for us with the background.
