It’s a tough call, but Boca Grande may be the perfect place to have the quintessential Florida wedding.
First there’s the water surrounding the Island. This is the aquamarine, clear to the bottom, teaming with dolphins, kind of sea that the Florida Keys are famous for. With less tourists and more class, Boca Grande sits only two hours drive south from St. Petersburg.
Boca Grande also presents a “Real Florida” experience with its quiet streets, travelled frequently by golf car, and its old buildings including The Gasparilla Inn & Club. This hotel, featuring carefully preserved 100-year-old charm, was probably an easy choice for Kathryn Harper and Bert Martin III, of Tampa, who were married on the golf course there, overlooking the bay. We were honored to photograph the event and the subsequent tented-reception near the croquet lawn. The reception featured the band Complete Desire out of Atlanta, who kept the party going through the evening’s rainstorm.
Our kayak came in handy again, this time we used “Yahtzee” to tour the island on the day before the wedding, making scene-setting shots as we went. We were also really pleased that our friend Armando Solares could help us with photographing the cocktail hour while we made beach portraits of the bridal party and photographed the newlyweds on Banyan Street. It was also a pleasure working with Bradley Hassen, of Tampa’s Lillian Stewart Events, and her expert team.
